I Hate Having My Photo Taken”: How a Good Photographer Helps

You are not the only person who hates being photographed

One of the most common things we hear when someone notices the camera is, “I hate having my photograph taken.” It is often followed by, “I never look good in pictures,” or, “I am not photogenic.” As photographers in Mallorca, we hear this from private clients, business owners, conference speakers and guests at events. It is normal, and it does not mean that good photographs of you are impossible.

The problem is often the experience, not your appearance

Most people do not actually hate photographs. They hate the feeling of being watched, assessed or expected to perform. That discomfort changes posture and expression. Shoulders rise, hands become awkward and a natural face is replaced by a smile being held for too long. A skilled photographer recognises this and does not treat it as a failure on the subject’s part.

Good photography is a collaboration

At Phoenix Media Mallorca, Vicki McLeod and Oliver Neilson do not expect people to arrive knowing how to pose. It is our job to create the conditions for a good photograph. Sometimes that means offering clear direction. Sometimes it means starting a conversation, allowing movement or waiting until the person forgets about the camera for a moment.

You do not have to force a smile

A false smile is usually the result of being told to smile before you feel comfortable. You can look calm, interested, thoughtful or amused without producing a large grin on demand. At parties and commercial events, natural interaction often provides the best expression. When a posed photograph is needed, simple guidance and a little patience are more effective than repeatedly asking someone to smile.

Give the photographer more than one frame

Expressions change in fractions of a second. People blink, speak and move. The first photograph is often the most self-conscious because everyone is waiting for the shutter. A professional event photographer will normally take several carefully timed frames and select the strongest one. Staying in place for a few seconds longer often produces the relaxed photograph you hoped for.

Focus on the event, not the camera

The most useful advice is to remain involved in what is happening. Talk to the person beside you. Listen to the speaker. Enjoy the joke. Look at the people you came to see. Natural event photography works because the photographer observes real interactions rather than constantly interrupting them.

Photography that respects the people in front of the lens

Professional photography is not about catching people at their worst. It is about understanding light, timing, body language and human behaviour. Whether we are photographing a private party, a company event or a conference in Mallorca, our aim is to make the experience straightforward and respectful. You do not need to become someone else for the camera. You need a photographer who knows how to photograph you as you are.

Talk to Phoenix Media Mallorca

If camera nerves are one of your concerns, tell us before the event. Vicki McLeod and Oliver Neilson will explain how we work and build that into the photography plan. Explore our event photography in Mallorca or contact Phoenix Media Mallorca to discuss your event.
